Last week we got a very special package in the mail from grandpa–a delightful mystery waiting to be opened.  The oohs and ahs upon discovering the box’s contents were not diminished when the kids saw that it was not full of toys, as they guessed after a shake test.  Instead it was packed with construction projects (i.e.  small boards to nail or otherwise attach things onto) they had started earlier in grandpa’s workshop at Christmastime, plus all kinds of well-chosen nails, washers, springs, hairpins, and other odds and ends to help complete their inventions.

As soon as we took everything out of the box,  the boys boys ran to get their hardhats while I got out the hammers and screw drivers they requested.  And then, once in their gear, they immediately set to work.

The construction team was especially interested in hammering nails and investigating the properties of the magnets included in the box–very useful for scooping up the tiny washers and hairpins off the pavement when they were finished.  As for what they made…well, you can decide for yourself!

Who needs more toys when you’ve got tools!?

Thanks Grandpa!
