Since yesterday, this song has been singing itself my head from one of my parents’ folk band records that I listened to as a child, most likely the Kingston Trio (right Mom and Dad? Or was it the New Christy Minstrels?):
Green, green, it’s green they say, on the far side of the hill,
Green, green, I’m goin’ away, to where the grass is greener still!”
That chorus repeats, and is all I remember, but maybe you’ll start singing too when you see my photos from yesterday’s trip to the UCR Botanic Gardens!
These winter-green grasses spring up after a very short rainy season, and will be gone in a matter of months–just about the time it gets spring green everywhere else. We’ll enjoy green in any shade while it lasts.
Although we’ve explored the Botanic Gardens many times, on this trip with our Quaker friends the kids discovered a new climbing boulder with a tree practically growing out of it. Just the perfect place for a bunch of exploring kids, one of whom was on a geocaching quest (click here if you want to know more) with her GPS unit and clue in hand. Our new-found boulder turned out to be ground zero for the cache, and though we searched in every likely crevice and branch, we never did find it.
There are times on these green-filled winter days when I miss the close-up snow whites…we may be due for another drive to the far side of the hill!

Yep, your right’
GREEN GREEN, IT’S GREEN THEY SAY
Green, green, it’s green , they say
On the far side of the hill
Green, green, I’m going away
To where the grass is greener still
Well I told my Momma on the day I was born
Don’t you cry when you see I’m gone
You know there ain’t no woman gonna settle me down
I just got to keep traveling on
There ain’t no woman in this whole wide world
Gonna tell me how to spend my time
I’m just a good loving rambling man
Singing, buddy, can you spare me a dime
I don’t care when the sun goes down
Where I lay my weary head
Green, green valley or rocky road
It’s there I’m gonna lay my head

Thanks for all of the lyrics, Dad. I think now I need to find the chords and learn myself the guitar part. Then I’ll change it to a “female voice,” as in, “ain’t no man in this whole wide world…”
Paul will love that.
🙂

It turns out my second band guess is the correct one–our faves, the New Christy Minstrels sang this song–if you can’t place them think of “A Mighty Wind” and you’ll get the idea.

I MUST find that song 🙂 This blog made my heart swell. I love green too much. It’s an obsession. Your blog made me realize why I love it so: It’s the color of fresh and new and clean and spring and sun and grass and outdoors and play and run on sentences! xoxoxo
